Endocrinology & Thyroid
Diabetes and Endocrine Center, Thyroid Specialists of Michigan The Diabetes and Endocrine Center, Thyroid Specialists of Michigan is a full-service, patient-centered practice devoted to the full spectrum of endocrinology. We help patients find today's most effective treatment for thyroid disorders.
Why Saint Mary's? Doctors Ruggero Battan, MD, and Douglas D. Notman, MD, are uniquely qualified and focused on thyroid diseases with long term experience spanning decades.
They have received ECNU certification (Endocrine Certification in Neck Ultrasound), achieved only by few endocrinologists nationwide. They are the only two physicians in West Michigan with this certification.
Their practice at Saint Mary's is accredited by the Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, an accomplishment reached only by about 20 endocrinology practices in the whole country.
Thyroid Treatment Options/Technologies We perform ultrasounds of thyroid/parathyroid/neck on patients referred for various thyroid/parathyroid conditions; These are performed and interpreted by the physician at the time of the visit. If necessary, we perform ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsies right here at the Center reducing the time you have to spend with procedures.
The provider who refers to us need not schedule a patient for expensive and time-consuming scans before their patient comes to see us. This results in great savings of time and money, without sacrificing excellence!
We see patients with multiple types of thyroid conditions including:
- Nodules
- Goiter
- Thyroid cancer
- Hypothyroidism
- Hyperthyroidism
- Graves' disease
- Hashimoto's thyroiditis
- Thyroid conditions in pregnancy or post-partum
- Abnormal thyroid tests
The Patient Experience Thyroid cancer/thyroid nodules are on the rise in the U.S. population. Surgery, radioiodine therapy or other interventions will be needed in selected patients. An individualized patient-centered approach while using state-of-the-art guidelines is provided to our patients. We counsel and discuss with out patients when and how to apply all the modalities of therapy.
We can weigh risk versus benefits of various interventions because of our long term clinical practice focused on thyroid diseases. We have collaborated with referring providers for decades who can easily contact us to discuss appropriate workups and potential referrals for the diseases we treat. Open communication maintains excellence in care and avoids duplication of services.
